Benefits of Chewing Gum with Xylitol

Xylitol is a natural sweetener that is low in calories and low on the glycemic index. It is derived from the bark of birch trees, coconut shells and cottonseed hulls. Xylitol stops the BAD bacteria that causes cavities by inhibiting its cellular growth and decreasing the numbers present in your mouth. Xylitol cannot be digested by the bad bacteria and interferes with how the bacteria “holds on” to the surface of our teeth.

Xylitol has also been shown to remineralize your tooth’s enamel making the surface stronger, similar to the action of fluoride in your toothpaste.

Xylitol also increases your saliva flow which helps neutralize any acid attacks from occurring and decreases the discomfort associated with dry mouth.

The recommendation is for up to 5 grams a day, chewing after meals or snacks until the flavor is gone. Please take note that high dosages of xylitol may cause diarrhea in some children.

Look for chewing gum with xylitol listed as one of the first main ingredients. Not only is chewing gum with xylitol a healthy option, it also a natural option!
